Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign stands for clear computer designed removable teeth aligner trays. Each aligner is custom made to fit a patients teeth, based on the required correction. They are practically invisible, and in most cases, they move teeth more efficiently and more quickly than conventional wires and brackets. Most importantly you need not change your life-style when wearing Invisalign.

Invisalign will also help you to maintain good oral hygiene since you can take them off, before eating or for before cleaning your teeth.

To begin with, a series of aligner trays are computer manufactured for your treatment. As your correction progresses, you replace the aligner with the next one until you go through all the aligner trays made for you.

How long the whole treatment will take?

On average, the Invisalign treatment last about a year. However individual scenarios would vary considerably. Please talk to your dentist at Dr. Thanos Kristallis and Associates to give you an evaluation for your specific situation.

What is Invisalign Express?

Invisalign® and Invisalign Express ® stands for the same treatment type. The Express option is simply a scaled down version of the regular Invisalign system. Express Invisalign is a way to treat less complex orthodontic cases at a lower price.

For example a regular Invisalign treatment may involve up to twenty to thirty aligner sets depending on the complexity of the correction needed. For Express Invisalign only ten or less aligner trays are used. Due to the reduction in number of trays and the number of required dental visits, the cost involved will also be less for Express Invisalign.

Because a reduced number of aligners are used, the express plan is recommended only in the simplest of cases. This includes treating limited arch expansions, mild tooth crowding and minor tooth rotations. We also recommend the express system, to make minor tooth alignment improvements for cosmetic dental procedures such as porcelain veneers.

How it is done?

During your first visit, your dentist at Dr. Thanos Kristallis and Associates will develop your treatment plan. This will include checking your teeth alignment and taking a full mouth panoramic X-ray. We will also take precision molds of your upper and lower teeth. These precision molds are then sent to Invisalign to develop a series of computer-generated aligner trays. These clear, removable aligners will steadily and gradually move your teeth into the desired position.

You will change your aligners to a new one in every two to three weeks. We will check your progress after each set of aligner is given to you. We can also give you a series of aligners at once if you prefer to visit us less frequently. You must wear your aligners all the time except when you eat, brush and floss.

What can you expect?

Depending on the extent of correction required you would need to wear the aligners from 6 months to a year or sometimes more than a year. However you will start seeing the results in a few months of wearing the aligners. Considering that the response to orthodontic forces vary from individual to individual, the treatment duration will be specific to individual circumstances. User compliance in wearing the appliances can also affect the quality of results and the duration of the treatment.

What are the risks and other considerations?

  • While wearing Invisalign, you must maintain good oral hygiene; otherwise you may risk cavity formation. However most of our patients reported that their oral hygiene habits improved due to the fact that they were wearing Invisalign.
  • As already stated, patient compliance in regular wearing the Invisalign aligners is required, otherwise your teeth may not move as fast as you expect.
  • Invisalign is not an ideal choice when severe teeth correction or bone movements are necessary.
  • When crowded teeth are involved, thinning the width of teeth is often required. A narrow gap is created between the teeth by filing the enamel. This will provide the extra space required for the inward movement of teeth.

What is the cost of Invisalign treatment?

The cost of Invisalign is often comparable to traditional metal braces. The cost is mostly dependent on how many aligner trays are needed to effect the required correction. The experienced doctors at Dr. Thanos Kristallis and Associates will be happy to schedule an appointment so that we could give you an accurate estimate of the cost in your particular case.
